Homo Faber or the need to move beyond
*Homo faber - latin “tool wo/man”
Painting chose me to unveil the truth. The truth about the controversy of life; the joy of solitude; stamina; the supreme authority of that genius sparkle which keeps us humans …
By quoting Hannah Arendt and Max Scheler’s concept of “Homo Faber” - describing man's ability to control the environment by means of tools, I chose this title for my first Asian series of paintings made in Shanghai. Therefore, I conceived a hybrid project about the innate drive of humans to fabricate things, to invent and be creative, or destructive if the “tools” bare malefic qualities. Questioning the "knowledge tools”, the "power tools” and humans as tools, I elaborated a visual response based on my own experience and most recent fears.
As this project triggers an irresistible, primal urge to create, my imagery relies extensively on the figurative representation, with a key element: the human arms and hands as the synonym for “faber” to which I add dynamic, vibrant brush-strokes. This concept is allowing me to illustrate a zoomed texture of each mark, large geometric shapes entwined around cropped body elements in order to emphasize the flowing nature of human paradox. This project aims to step aside from omnipresent technologies, to celebrate creativity and pure joy of color.
